There are many fabulous combinations in the Lone Star State. Rice and beans with your enchiladas. Bright bluebonnets, Indian Paintbrush and that one-of-a-kind Texas sky. Boots and, well, you name it. But the combination of glowing qualities located in the growing community of Fair Oaks Ranch is pretty rare, even by Texas standards.
Located halfway between historic San Antonio and Hill Country favorite, Boerne, Fair Oaks Ranch is a dream location for someone who wants a slice of both city and country life with their home-sweet-home. The commute is short to either location—about fifteen minutes to San Antonio, just an exit away from Boerne. Originally a 5,000-acre working ranch owned by the Fair family, Fair Oaks Ranch has now nearly doubled in size and features beautiful homes and a quiet “urban rural” lifestyle.
This location means residents can take advantage of all the great shopping and restaurants of north San Antonio (The Shops of La Canterra are eighteen minutes away on I-10), without living in the mess of traffic such development sometimes brings. So, you can feel free to stock up on your fashion faves, nosh on a gourmet taco and be home in time to hear the nighttime chirp of the locusts. Not too shabby!
Less than a mile from Highland Homes’ Front Gate neighborhood is the sprawling Fair Oaks Ranch Golf and Country Club (www.clubcorp.com/Clubs/Fair-Oaks-Ranch-Golf-Country-Club). This club is one of the major reasons residents find life in Fair Oaks Ranch so sweet! Originally the Fair family ranch home, it was built in the 1930s and added onto over the years, creating an ambiance of throwback elegance. It’s the kind of place that would be featured in a movie—Austin stone, twisty native oaks and stretches of cool St. Augustine grass—complete with “let’s meet at the club” drinks and dining.
The country club is not all good looks, though, with two championship 18-hole golf courses, 14 tennis courts, a swimming pool (with swim team for the kids, of course) and an up-to-date fitness center, the amenities are top-notch. Programs for kids make it a mom’s favorite: there’s a Mother’s Day Out program and even a Parents’ Night Out.
For young families, public education in Fair Oaks Ranch is provided through the Boerne Independent School District (boerne-isd.net). Elementary-aged children attend Fair Oaks Ranch Elementary, kindergarten through 6th, home of the aptly-named Mustangs. This elementary is a Texas Education Agency “Exemplary” school and is known for its exceptional gifted-and-talented program. Older kids mosey on to Boerne’s other top-ranked schools, including two high schools that were both named to Newsweek’s “America’s Top 500 High Schools” list in 2014.
The best part of life in Fair Oaks Ranch, however, might be the people. A friendly mix of long-time residents, retirees, and many families raising children, the general consensus is simple: folks are happy in this town. Maybe it’s because “The Ranch” offers a balance of all the good stuff: fun things to do with your downtime, a short commute for the worker-bees, and ample room to ramble… and that’s a win-win-win.
